Braine

Diplomat and former Ambassador

A servant of the state since 2002 and co-founder of the CFDT alongside Stéphane Hessel, Édouard Braine has had a distinguished diplomatic career in Europe, Algeria, and Kuala Lumpur. Now retired in Brittany, he continues his commitment to social causes by founding the Nouvelle Association Santiago Accessible, dedicated to advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and marginalized groups.

Édouard Braine, former Consul General of France in London and board member of the National Council for Disability, is a prominent figure in the defense of disability rights. A graduate of the prestigious École Nationale d'Administration (Class of 1973), he pursued a remarkable diplomatic career with postings in Greece, Algeria, and Malaysia, until a horseback riding accident in 1989 profoundly changed his life, leaving him tetraplegic. Despite this challenge, his determination remained unwavering, even after his retirement.

After his accident, Braine settled in London, a city he appreciates for its accessibility, often contrasting it with the challenges of Paris. He emphasizes the importance of specific support for people with disabilities and acknowledges the critical role of financial resources, exemplified by his innovative wheelchair capable of navigating stairs.

Through intensive rehabilitation, an extraordinary willpower, and the unwavering support of his wife, he regained a level of autonomy that allows him to drive a specially adapted vehicle and use a computer.

A Champion of an Inclusive Society
Édouard Braine highlights the lack of inclusion in French educational institutions, from primary schools to prestigious universities, which discourages young people with disabilities and limits their employability. He has also spearheaded initiatives such as "Artistes et Compagnie," an artistic troupe composed entirely of individuals with disabilities. While he critiques some positive discrimination policies for being restrictive, he actively advocates for a society where everyone, regardless of their condition, can achieve their full potential.

Since retiring to Brittany, Édouard Braine has continued to fight for inclusion and equality, making his journey a source of inspiration and a driver of change.
